Meet a Mom Blogger: Tishia Lee

August 30, 2008 by Kelly · 1 Comment

The first time I saw Tishia Lee’s blog, Adventures of a WAHM, my first thought was about how pretty it was.  That was a little funny considering the fact that the first post I read was about how often she changes her theme.

Change seems to be sort of a touch point for this very candid look into a single mother’s life.  Tishia’s blog isn’t about how to be a better single parent or even what it’s like to be a single parent.  Instead, it is about what it’s like to be her.  And she happens to be a single mom.

The blog talks about Tishia’s day-to-day experiences doing things like raising her son Caleb, getting her heart broken, and reaching the occasional life-altering epiphany.  She does all of this in a very straight-forward, down-to-earth way that makes you feel like you just called your girlfriend up on the phone and got caught up on her life for the day.

The posts on Adventures of a WAHM really seem to resonate with her readers, too, as so many of the comments are variations on the theme of “me, too.”  She boldly shares what is in her heart at any given time, and it’s clear that she is giving voice to what other hearts are feeling.

It’s rare to find a space on the Internet that could truly be considered “intimate,” but Tishia Lee’s blog seems to be just that.  She shares personal details, but the outcome isn’t something obnoxious or cheesy.  Instead, it kind of makes you want to grab a pint of ice cream to eat during tomorrow’s call from your new best friend.

Meet a Mom Blogger: Parenting Zoo

August 25, 2008 by Kelly · Leave a Comment

Meet another awesome Mom Blogger that calls MomWebs home here on the internet.

If parenting is a zoo, then Annette Yen is the zookeeper. Her offering to the blogosphere (one of them, anyway) is parentingzoo.com, a fun space to pick up a helpful tidbits on parenting preschoolers and toddlers. The topics on this particular blog are varied, but they all fall nicely into the category of “stuff moms should know about.” Pretty much every single post is actually really interesting, and how often can you say that?

There are a lot of ideas shared on Parenting Zoo, and some of the best ones are found in the “Instead of TV” category. For those days when you feel like no one could possibly understand, there’s the “Stories from the Front” series that shares tales of woe ranging from cupcake icing on the upholstery to an entire bottle of shampoo on the tile floor (my, your house smells lovely). For activities that everyone can enjoy, the “For Kids” category delves into everything from classical music for babies to scrapbooking that even preschoolers can do.

One of the best features of Parenting Zoo is that Annette spends a lot of time finding great ideas on the ‘net and then shares links to them with her readers. Some of her recommendations include great podcasts for moms, a place to share home videos without fear that your kids will be witness to the worst YouTube has to offer, and even great deals and specials that everyone should know about. (Seriously, did you know that more than 70 museums in the U.S. give free admission on certain days just for showing your Bank of America card? I didn’t until I read about it on Parenting Zoo.)

Annette gets a little help from syndicated columnist Lisa Barker, aka, “JellyMom,” and you want to be sure you’re not drinking milk when you read her posts, because it might end up shooting out of your nose. She’s a funny, funny lady.

In addition to all of the free content, the blog also offers an option to purchase the Parenting Zoo Toolbox. This includes quite a few resources for parents in the form of downloadable book and guides, activities for teaching the alphabet, and even podcasts on relevant topics.

All-in-all, this blog is a great resource for those trying to manage their toddlers and preschoolers in a way that helps everyone stay entertained and sane. Please insert your own “zoo” metaphor in which you think of your children as silly monkeys, baby birds, or jackals that need a little help from the zookeeper.

Meet a Mom Blogger: Life from my Laptop

August 20, 2008 by Kelly · 1 Comment

Alyssa Avant has been mommy blogging since 2005, and her latest venture is called Life from My Laptop. (I just love that title, by the way.) It wasn’t until I was poking around on some older posts that I realized the name could be taken two ways. Either it’s a view into her life as told from her laptop, or life is actually springing forth from the computer. This idea is bolstered by the butterfly logo and is underscored by the fact that Alyssa is a work-at-home mom who does a lot of her business from that very same laptop.

The blog is sort of a hybrid of the personal blog and the business blog. Some days Alyssa talks about how she manages a schedule with three children under the age of five, and other days she talks more about her business ministering to young women. No matter what the topic, though, Alyssa is conscientious about giving praise and credit to God.

In general, Life from My Laptop is a friendly blog that shares a few links, contributes to a few memes, and offers a few chuckles from work-at-home mom land. Alyssa’s style is chatty and lively, and she obviously enjoys having this outlet for the excitement going on inside her very busy brain.
